Ortofon ST-70 STEP-UP Transformer
The Ortofon ST-70 step-up transformer has been designed for discerning audiophiles and music lovers to elevate the overall performance of their vinyl hi-fi system.
Optimised for premium Moving Coil (MC) cartridges and designed to take pressure off the phono stage, the ST-70 combines high-end components along with world-class engineering, for unparalleled sound reproduction.
Starting with high quality Lundahl™ transformers, surrounded by a specialized mu-metal shielding, the ST-70 is engineered from the ground-up to ensure that every detail in a complex array of notes is reproduced with utter purity, with freedom from internal and external sources of interference. Elsewhere inside the box, the dual-mono design provides discrete circuitry for each channel, resulting in the elimination of crosstalk and possible distortions. This results in cleaner, clearer reproduction with substantially increased stereo imaging. Regardless of the composition being played, the ST-70's expansive stereo separation provides lifelike realism, and accurate tonal balance devoid of coloration.
To further minimize signal degradation and maximize signal flow, the ST-70 has been engineered using a high-quality, industrial-grade PCB. Additionally, gold plated RCA jacks with Teflon insulation provide optimal conductivity for use with high quality interconnects.
The ST-70 is compatible with a wide range of higher-end Moving Coil cartridges thanks to its two Gain/Impedance options, set using internal jumpers. But for those already using Ortofon Cadenza cartridges, the ST-70 provides the perfect technical and sonic match to the range.
If you're struggling with distortion or aren't comfortable with the amount of gain you're employing in your system then a Step-Up transformer might be what you need. Boosting the signal from an MC cartridge to the level of an MM cartridge gives you a louder signal without needing to boost it via your amp, and therefore risking distortion to your musical signal.
